Interaction Information:
Comment | The mammalian pineal gland is a neuroendocrine transducer. Photic information from the retina is transmitted to the pineal gland through the SCN in the hypothalamus and the sympathetic nervous system. Neural input to the gland is norepinephrine, while the output is melatonin. The synthesis and release of melatonin are stimulated by darkness and inhibited by light. |
